Email: colloquium@fsw.eur.nl

Consumer neuroscience Theory of Mind and mirror neurons are two mechanisms that operate at an automatic or reflexive level, and are important drivers of social intelligence. We use fMRI and field studies to investigate how individual differences in de functioning of these social intelligence mechanisms relate to the job performance and ethical orientations of salespeople. Our results show that when salespeople are presented with social stimuli during fMRI, they display individual differences in the amount of neurological processing in regions that play key roles in social intelligence, and these individual differences show associations with salespeople’s performance, strategy and ethical orientations. Furthermore, Advances in techniques from neuroscience such as functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) suggest that despite their complexity and relative inaccessibility, mental processes can be measured more directly. Several commercial based neuro imaging projects by the Neuro intelligence Group, and papers in the field of consumer neuroscience will be discussed.

Dysfunctional Use of Social and Irrelevant Negative Feedback Signals in Depressed Patients and Healthy Subjects Scoring High on Neuroticism
It is well known that patients diagnosed with major depression view the world view the world more negatively than healthy controls. This negativity bias has been found in various contexts and can have serious consequences for learning. When feedback is given about the way a patient performs, the feedback can be interpreted in a too negative way, which can possibly impair the patients in making use of the information conveyed by the feedback signal and optimize future behavior. In my talk I will focus on how patients and healthy controls perceive and use various types of feedback using behavioral and EEG measures. I will relate these findings to similar studies using participants scoring high on subjective measures of neuroticism, which is thought to be a vulnerability factor for depression.

Imitation and joint action
Converging evidence suggests that observing somebody acting activates a corresponding motor representation in the observer. The specific conditions, however, under which we co-represent other people`s behaviour are still poorly understood. In the first part of my talk, I will present research from imitation and joint action paradigms indicating that attribution of intentionality is a pre-condition for motor co-representation. Only when we believe to interact with an intentional agent we co-represent his/her behaviour. In the second part, I will outline research investigating the social consequences of imitation. Interestingly, we found a slightly different pattern of results in high-functioning adults with autism.
